FS#190 - photon message reporting
couple of observations:
if no photons are gathered (hey it happens ... my typo) when attempting to save a photon map the warning message just indicates that it couldn’t save the map, maybe the message could be enhanced to say something like: No photons were gathered so no map information was saved. At first I thought something had changed in my I/O restrictions (I’m writing to an image directory not current or work directory)
when reading a previously saved photon map there is no indication that it was read in other than the end stats showing a small amount of photon time. I don’t recall but didn’t v3.6 indicate that the a previously saved map was being used? Just for the heck of it I moved the map file aside and it did prove to me that it was indeed being input. Some sort of message at the time the file is read in might be helpful.

Reason for closing: Fixed
Additional comments about closing:
Closing as fixed. Please open a new issue on github with a test scene & set up for the last open question if still a concern. Thanks.
Looks to me as if changes were made to
the better with a smallish concern
remaining in a situation I could not
re-create quickly.
Additional messages added in the photon load & save code (#5468)
The "no photon to save" was already explicit, now with more detail about surface/media count (so, if one is empty, it get reported).
The "starting load" message added.
Any comments about the incorporated solution so far ?
Does it provide satisfaction to the requester ?
ran the "scene file" version of benchmark.pov with these results:
1st run with save_file "Test.ph":
Photon count 6638
Possible Photon Error: Photon map for media is empty.
2nd run with load_file "Test.ph":
Photon Warning: Starting the load of photon file Test.ph
3rd run with load_file "Test.ph" with "Test.ph" missing:
Photon Warning: Starting the load of photon file Test.ph
Photon Error: Could not load photon map (Test.ph)
Fatal error in renderer: Uncategorized error.
even with the media keyword commented out in photon global settings block AND photon light_source media_interaction/attenuation off
I still get:
Photon count 2960346
Possible Photon Error: Photon map for media is empty
... so this may be misleading.
