3.70 beta 39 Task Description

Versions of POV-Ray prior to 3.7 had the ability to write the image output as a stream to STDOUT. This was particularly useful in unix as it allowed POV-Ray output to be directly piped to other processes.

The introduction of SMP and the associated non-linear generation of pixels complicates stream output to the extent that it is not currently available in v3.7.

At a minimum 3.7 must at least be able to write the completed image to STDOUT after a render - this is not an optimal solution but is better than nothing. Ideally however once entire lines are complete (most likely this will occur in batches due to the block nature of the render subdivision) these lines will be written immediately to STDOUT (after possibly being processed through the appropriate image format routines).

NB currently the image format routines are not invoked until the entire render is completed, so to do this would be a significant modification. However if we limit real-time stream output to “simple” non-compressed formats (e.g. PPM), it would not be overly difficult, and from the point of view of Unix-like operating systems (where the piping feature is most useful), if the data is in PPM format it can easily be transformed into anything else.

Task Description

This is a list of unimplemented features and things to fix with respect to 3.7 vs 3.6 compatibility. They either need to be fixed in code, or failing that, to be documented prior to release.


Create_INI works differently from 3.6. Prior versions of POV-Ray would write all options to the file, even if they were not supplied by the user (non-supplied options would take the default value). Currently in 3.7, only supplied options are written, because the front-end does not send unused options to the back-end. The proper fix for this would be to have a set of defines that establish the defaults all in one place (currently we rely on hard-coded values scattered around the code), and for the Output_INI_Option() function to look up and use the default when not supplied. As this is not likely to be done before 3.7 release, we need to document it as a temporary situation.

The following messages are marked as ‘currently not supported by code’ in povmsgid.h. We need to check where this comment is correct and if so the docs need to be updated to indicate this (for items that are already documented). Some items may be re-implemented later, and some may never be:

Task Description

Most sample scenes and include files were designed at times when POV-Ray did not to any proper gamma handling, or still used the inferior 3.6 “assumed_gamma” mechanism.

All the scenes and include files should be reviewed, and updated to fit the new 3.7 gamma model.

The primary task will probably be gamma-adjusting literal color values and ambient parameters; I suggest using macros (which ideally should be defined in an include file) to be set according to the #version statement, so the scene/include file could be kept compatible with older versions.

Currently, output image is buffered using POV-Ray’s RGBFT color model and floating point values, leading to a memory consumption of 20 bit per pixel. This is an unproportionally large memory footprint, given that the only further processing performed on the buffered data is conversion of the data to the desired output file format, which will typically use only 3 bytes per pixel (at most 12 bit per pixel).

The situation can be improved by choosing the output image buffer container based on the desired output file format and parameters. To this end, the following code changes should be made:

  • Bundle image file format handler code into classes (typically one per file format)
  • Include a method to determine the best data container type for the image buffer
  • Instantiate the desired image file format handler object prior to rendering, querying the handler object for an image buffer

In addition to picking a suitable image data container from the already existing palette, careful design might also allow to use custom containers to directly pass the data to a library (in case the library provides its own buffering anyway), or write it directly to the output file (e.g. when writing image data to stdout). To make this compatible with multithreaded rendering, the following changes would have to be made:

  • Add code to detect when a row of SMP blocks has been finished, and call a certain method on the image handler object
  • Design the custom containers in such a way that they can buffer any number of unfinished SMP block rows as needed

The sphere_sweep renders well when specified directly, but when it is scaled, its bounding box is calculated incorrectly, which clips the object so it almost disappears.

The effect is present for all three types of splines.

I’m attaching a test scene and the rendering result. The saving of the object with #declare has no effect, I just wanted to show both transformed and untransformed version.

I don’t think this issue is related to other artifacts occuring with sphere_sweep, as it is obviously an issue of the internal bounding box.

In the photons map, the direction of each photon is stored as separate latitude & longitude angles (encoded in one byte each), causing the longitudinal direction component’s precision to be unnecessarily high for directions close to the “poles” (Y axis); in addition, encoded value -128 is never used. For better overall precision as well as precision homogenity, the following scheme could be used instead:

  • Encode the latitude (-pi/2 to +pi/2) into LatCount=226 distinct values (= 256*sqrt(pi)/2) rounded to the next even number) from 0 to LatCount-1 using
latCode = (int)((LatCount-1) * (lat/M_PI + 0.5) + 0.5)
  • For each latitude code, define a specific number of encodable longitude values, LngCount[latCode] = approx. cos(lat)*pi*65536/(2*LatCount); this can be a pre-computed table, and may need slight tweaking for optimum use of the code space. Encode the longitude (-pi to +pi) into a value from 0 to (LngCount[lat]-1) using

To conserve space, direction vectors could be scaled by (2^N-1) and stored as (N+1)-bit signed integer triples rather than floating point values; due to the limited precision of the lat/long information, 8 bits per coordinate might be enough, giving a table size of 96k. A full double-precision table would require 786k instead.

Task Description

A low priority thought for the future: isosurface now only allows contained_by to be a sphere or a box. It would be more intuitive to allow the same objects that are allowed in clipped_by and bounded_by (although it probably needs to be finite). It would enable allow much faster rendering in many cases:

1) There are a lot of cases when the sphere or a box are very bad in bounding - if an object has a hole, a torus may be better, and in many cases, cylindrical bounding would help a lot.
2) Sometimes, having a too large contained_by object includes far-away parts of the iso-function, and expose large gradients that you want to avoid. If a bounding object is better, you can decrease the max_gradient and speed up the render.
3) The isosurface is usually much more expensive to calculate than any normal bounding object, so it’s an improvement even if the intesection test is not as fast as bounding box.
4) A typical case: if you use texture-like functions to make the surface realistically rough, you know almost exactly what the bounding object is - it can be the original unmodified object.
5) For isosurface terrains, a preprocessing macro could create a rough mesh-like bounding object to contain the “mountains”, thus making everything faster.
6) In case you want clipping, having the contained_by set to the same object probably avoits calculating too many intersections.

The main modification is probably that the intersections of bounding objects can be split into more than one interval - but it’s probably worth it, the isosurfaces are usually a speed bottleneck.

In the folder “ready made scenes”, there is the file “B0 - Basic scene 11 - pure white background.txt”.
The text string to be rendered lacks the “e” in “pure”. Unfortunately, this makes the typo visible in the “Insert menu” preview image.

If the “e” is added, the text needs to be scaled a bit smaller (0.43 instead of 0.44) to fit inside the view.

I’ve been trying to upgrade povray 3.6.1 to 3.7-beta-32. I’ve configured with no additional arguments, and the configure dies with:

I figured that the problem was with my boost installation (1.35) and upgraded boost to 1.39; the problem remains. I tried to see if exit was defined in libboost_thread and/or libboost_thread-boost_thread and it isn’t. Just to be sure that my currrent setup works for the released version, I rebuilt/reninstalled 3.6.1, which went without problem.

I’m on a slackware-12.2 box, using gcc-4.4.0.

Task Description

Hello,

when I use an image_map within a pigment_map (for example only a half of a box gets the image_map), the image_map is not rendered correctly.

For example when I have this box (scene and images are attached)

Task Description

I tried to render a candle’s flame (an object with interior made of emission media) against an Alpha background. In 3.6, the “flame” appears as a bright object against the alpha background; but in 3.7, the flame disappears against the alpha (as the attached scene will make clear, the “flame” is still visible against opaque background objects). I used the settings “Output_Alpha=true Output_File_Type=N”.

If there is another (better?) way to achieve a similar effect, I am open to using a work-around.

Task Description

If the image is more than 1270 pixels wide or more than 720 pixels high, animation fails with a segmentation fault during the second rendered frame. This happens after parsing is complete and the .pov-state file is created. The last message line is the “[Rendering...]” line. (There is also a separate, but possibly related, issue that the output display does not work for these renders.)

On one occasion, POV-Ray hung, and I had to ctrl-Z kill -9 out of it.

On another occasion, instead of the segmentation fault, I got the message:

povray: xcb_io.c:140: dequeue_pending_request: Assertion `req == dpy->xcb->pending_requests' failed.

There is no crash when -D is used.

I have not run an animation this large in Windows, so I don’t know if it’s a problem there.

Neither problem occurs in POV-Ray 3.6.1.

Code inspection shows that we’re still using fseek() and ftell() in various places (including text file input), which can’t handle file positions of 2GB and beyond (except on 64-bit linux machines); those calls need to be examined and (where appropriate) replaced with the fseek64() macro we’re already defining (but currently not using), and a to-be-defined ftell64() macro.

One potential (untested) error scenario would be a scene file calling a macro that is defined at the end of a > 2GB long include file.

Task Description

In POV-Ray’s documentation it says:

3.2.2.2 Max Image Buffer Memory
This INI parameter sets the number of megabytes of RAM to allow for output image caching. If the output image happens to use more than this, a file backed temporary image is used instead.

I used this INI file option because the default value (128 megabytes) seemed insufficient. pov-state backend files were always created and they were remarkably larger than the resulting image (bmp) files. Consequently, I set

Max_Image_Buffer_Memory = 3096

in the INI file so that POV-Ray should, according to the documentation, now be able to use 3 gigabytes of RAM so no backend temporary file would be needed at all (this large they were never).

However, while POV-Ray was rendering I still discovered a pov-state file and it still had a similar size.

Now I am confused: did the INI option not work or have I misunderstood the documentation? If the former is the case, that would be a bug, wouldn’t it?

I tested both under Windows XP and Debian 6.0.5.

Task Description

The following editor issue experienced in 3.7 RC 6 under Win7/64::

Place the curser at the middle of a row.
Press enter. Now the line has been split and the cursor is at the beginning of the new line, followed by the rest of the original line
Press backspace.
Instead of restoring the original line, the second part of the line disappears.

RC 3 under Vista/32 (and earlier versions) behave normally.

Task Description

This is an annoying little bug in the Windows GUI:

Installed 3.7 RC07 on Windows 8.
No previous povray installation on this machine.

How to reproduce error :

- Open a file in the editor.

- Right click on the files tab. This opens a popup menu showing “Open containing folder/Copy file to clipboard/....”.

-Now each selection in this menu does open the containing Folder. I cannot close or run any of the other actions in this menu.

Task Description

Hi,

I think I may have found a bug in the subsurface/radiosity features of Povray 3.7 attached image showing the issue and sample files required to reproduce. The original files (on povray forum images thread) had different radiosity settings but these ones show the problem and only take a few seconds to render the image without AA so probably better for bug fixing/testing etc.

Task Description

If a render is continued with the +c option and the render had completed, the render preview window will disappear and the show/hide render window button will be grayed. Even after the scene is modified and the command line options have been changed, the show/hide button will still be grayed.

Opening or changing to another scene and rendering will not restore the button, nor will rendering with +d. However, if a trace is started using -d, halted, then continued using +d (or allowed to finish completely with -d and a new one is started using +d), then the preview window is restored.

This behavior is different from 3.6.1, which correctly always showed the preview window (since +d is default) unless -d was specified.

Task Description

When rendering a series of scenes (e.g. animation, or render queue in POV-Ray for Windows), number_of_waves is not properly reset to its default value between scenes, causing the parameter to default to the value set by the previous scene.

For instance, rendering the following scenes from a queue will cause “arches.pov” to be rendered differently the second time:

  1. scenes\textures\finishes\arches.pov
  2. scenes\textures\normals\normavg.pov
  3. scenes\textures\finishes\arches.pov (again!)
