In the files bezier.cpp, fpmetric.cpp, fractal.cpp, hfield.cpp, isosurf.cpp, lathe.cpp, poly.cpp, polygon.cpp, prism.cpp, sor.cpp, and sphsweep.cpp the use of POV_MALLOC can be replaced by std::vector quite easily because the containing class already is a C++ class. As this is a low hanging fruit for continued code cleanup, it should be done sooner rather than later.

Task Description

This is a list of unimplemented features and things to fix with respect to 3.7 vs 3.6 compatibility. They either need to be fixed in code, or failing that, to be documented prior to release.

Create_INI works differently from 3.6. Prior versions of POV-Ray would write all options to the file, even if they were not supplied by the user (non-supplied options would take the default value). Currently in 3.7, only supplied options are written, because the front-end does not send unused options to the back-end. The proper fix for this would be to have a set of defines that establish the defaults all in one place (currently we rely on hard-coded values scattered around the code), and for the Output_INI_Option() function to look up and use the default when not supplied. As this is not likely to be done before 3.7 release, we need to document it as a temporary situation.

The following messages are marked as ‘currently not supported by code’ in povmsgid.h. We need to check where this comment is correct and if so the docs need to be updated to indicate this (for items that are already documented). Some items may be re-implemented later, and some may never be:

  • kPOVAttrib_TestAbort
  • kPOVAttrib_TestAbortCount
  • kPOVAttrib_VideoMode
  • kPOVAttrib_Palette
  • kPOVAttrib_DisplayGammaType
  • kPOVAttrib_FieldRender
  • kPOVAttrib_OddField
  • kPOVAttrib_AntialiasGammaType
  • kPOVAttrib_LightBuffer
  • kPOVAttrib_VistaBuffer
  • kPOVAttrib_DrawVistas

This bug should be edited to add/remove items as time goes by.

 141 DocumentationCompatibility Issue3.70 beta 37aVery LowLow Document changed behavior processing INI files Closed
100%
3.70 release Task Description

The documentation assumes that INI files (as well as the command line!) are parsed and processed instantly. This no longer holds true for POV-Ray 3.7, where parsing INI files (and the command line) and processing it are separate operations that occur at different times. As such, one consequence is that INI file options only take effect after reading the whole INI file, and possibly later.

As such, documentation statements such as <http://www.povray.org/documentation/view/3.6.1/222/>
“Note: that these options take effect immediately when specified. Obviously any error or warning messages that might occur before the option is read will not be affected.”

Are no longer correct. It needs to be explained that options only take effect after the INI file has been read. An error in the INi file causes other options _not_ to take effect because reading of the INi file is aborted prematurely.

 150 FrontendCompatibility Issue3.70 beta 37aVery LowLow Windows file association problems (Win7 only??) Closed
100%
Task Description

Windows allows you to associate programs with file extensions using the “Open with” file manager right-click menu extension.

I’m running Windows 7 64bit, and installed the 64 bit versions of 3.6.2 and the beta appropriately.

A couple of problems that I haven’t tested very thoroughly:

1. If you have both POV 3.6.2 and the beta installed at the same time, you can no longer using this dialog change the association to the beta once it has been created for 3.6.2. There’s no error or anything; it just opens the file inside 3.6.2 instead. Maybe because both versions appear as “POV-Ray for Windows” to this dialog? Would adding the version number to the name fix things? Anything I can do on my end of things to resolve this?

2. In POV-Ray 3.6.2, I can use this dialog to open *.inc, *.txt and other files in POV-Ray, but only if POV-Ray isn’t already running. If POV-Ray is already running I get an “Only /EDIT and /RENDER may be passed to previous instance” error. Files with the *.pov extension open properly regardless, without any error. I am unable to test this in the beta at the moment due to the first problem unfortunately. Could someone please test this with the beta and confirm whether the behavior also exists?

3. With the POV-Ray 3.7 beta, entering the following command in the command prompt results in the same error:

   "C:\Program Files\POV-Ray for Windows v3.7\bin\pvengine64.exe" "D:\Working\Povray\GearHead\LoadingScreen\btr_maanji.pov"

If I change it to the following it works however:

   "C:\Program Files\POV-Ray for Windows v3.7\bin\pvengine64.exe" /EDIT "D:\Working\Povray\GearHead\LoadingScreen\btr_maanji.pov"

Is this error/behavior really necessary? Would it be OK to instead change the behavior when the /EDIT flag is omitted in the
command-line such that the file is opened in the editor by default, without throwing an error?

 224 EditorCompatibility Issue3.70 RC3Very LowLow Keyword Completion does not work for several names Closed
100%
3.70 release Task Description

Keyword Completion does not work for several names.
I miss it for animation related names like frame_number or final_frame.

Typing “fram{TAB}” just inserts a TAB character after “fram” instead of completing it to frame_number.

Independently of that bug, typing {TAB} repeatedly does not cycle through possible names:
“fr{TAB}” gives “frequency” and “fresnel” and that’s all.

In version 3.6 it worked well.

My system is Windows 7 64bit and PovRay is 3.7.0.RC3.msvc9.win64

26Geometric PrimitivesDefinite Bug3.61Very LowLowArtifacts rendering a cloth which has two-side texturesTracked on GitHub
0%
Future release Task Description

Dear PovRay maintainers and developers, congratulations for your great RayTracer!

We think that we have found a bug while we were rendering a piece of cloth.

In this piece of cloth were defined two textures, one for one side and one for the another side:

  texture { mesh_tex0_0 }
  interior_texture { mesh_tex0_1 }
  • Please: Look at line 77414 of the attached file “test.pov” to see

these definitions in their original context.

We have found some artifacts in the final rendering, in concrete near some wrinkles,
please, look at the attached file “render_artifacts.tga”, I have painted a big green arrow
near the artifacts, maybe you’ll need to do a zoom to see them more accurately.

They are as though the texture of the other side was painted in the incorrect side.

Fortunately, we have a patch to fix this bug (thanks to Denis Steinemann, he made the
implementation for PovRay 3.5, so I have adapted these changes to release 3.6.1)

Although we have found this bug in the Windows and Linux 3.6.1 releases,
the patch was generated in Linux (using the source code release of “povray-3.6.1”).

To apply this patch, inside the parent folder of the directory “povray-3.6.1” execute:

            patch -p0 < other_side_artifacts.patch

And the “povray-3.6.1” will be patched and you will get a console output like this:

 patching file povray-3.6.1/source/lighting.cpp
 patching file povray-3.6.1/source/mesh.cpp
 patching file povray-3.6.1/source/render.cpp

We don’t know if this “hack” is enough smart to apply in the next release,
but we think that it fixes the bug (the artifacts dissapear).

Best regards and thank you very much for your great RayTracer!

 43 EditorDefinite BugAllVery LowLow Commas in path name Closed
100%
3.70 RC7 Task Description

In POV-ray 3.7 beta 33 under Windows XP, the editor’s MRU list incorrectly handles files that have a comma in the pathname. Only the part of the name before the comma appears on the MRU list, but the rest of the name is left off.
Consequently, the file cannot be reopened via the MRU list. The file is also not reopened on launch if pov was closed with the file open. This also occurs in 3.6.1, I haven’t tried it under 3.6.2 yet.

Interestingly enough, a quick peek in the registry shows that both 3.6 and 3.7
are saving the entire path name correctly under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\POV-Ray\v3.6\POV-Edit\Recent (or \v3.7\POV-Edit\Recent).

This seems to be limited strictly to the editor’s MRU list. The file can still be opened normally using the open dialog box. Calling POV-ray from the command line and using a file or path name with commas in it works correctly. Included files with commas in the path work correctly, and the Tools→Edit last rendered file/View last rendered file work correctly also.

To duplicate, save a file with a comma in the pathname (either in the directory
name or the filename itself). Close the file, then attempt to reopen it using the MRU list in the file menu.

 54 Texture/Material/FinishDefinite Bug3.70 beta 32Very LowLow Multi-textured blobs fail to increment trace level Closed

Task Description

Trace level is not handled properly with blobs using per-component reflective or refractive textures, leading to lockups. Stepping through the code, it seems that POV-Ray fails to properly mark the blob object as increasing the trace level.

plane { y, -0.1 pigment { color rgb 1 } }

The following modification to the texture will give the expected results:

    texture { uv_mapping pigment { image_map {png "FOOBAR.png"} } }

The problem can be observed with both POV-Ray 3.7 (tested with beta.34), as well as 3.6 (tested with 3.6.2).

 88 Image formatDefinite Bug3.70 beta 36Very LowLow File output code does not properly handle negative colo ...Closed
100%
3.70 beta 37 Task Description

File output code for virtually all file formats performs gamma correction on unclipped color values, which leads to issues when color values happen to be negative for some reason and gamma does not happen to be an integer value such as 1.0 or 2.0. As a consequence, subsequent steps (clipping and converting to integer) apparently produce compiler-dependent results. Compiled with Microsift or Intel compilers, POV-Ray seems to write zero brightness in such cases, while compiled with g++ 4.4 (and possibly other compilers) it seems to write full brightness instead.

(See thread news://news.povray.org:119/4ba819f6@news.povray.org for examples.)

The proper solution should be to apply gamma correction after clipping.

 102 Parser/SDLDefinite Bug3.6Very LowLow #switch directive parsing problem Closed
100%
Task Description

The #switch directive isn’t parsing correctly. In the following construct NO warning or error is generated:

#switch (RF)

case (0)
	rotate z*355
#break
case (144)
	rotate z*7.5
#break
case (216)
	rotate z*5

#end

RF is a variable passed to the macro in which this construct resides. The first ‘case’ action IS executed, but none of the others are on successive calls to the macro. If I properly add ‘#’ to the second case the 1st and 2nd condition are executed but not the last. If ‘#’ is REMOVED from any of the break directives an error is generated and parsing halts.

100%
3.70 beta 38 Task Description

POV-Ray 3.7-generated JPEG image output files do not conform to the JFIF standard. Most importantly, the files written do not use the standard YCbCr color model (they seem to use plain RGB instead), nor do they have a proper JFIF tag.

As a consequence, some software may be unable to read the generated JPEG files properly. In addition, it seems that POV-Ray mixes up the Red and Blue channels.

With photons the left and right bottom corners of the image will be clipped:

I posted this question in the general news group and got an answer by Christian Froeschlin,
who could reproduce the problem and suggested as workaround to divide the slide into small stripes

http://news.povray.org/povray.general/thread/%3Cweb.4c972bdffcc128eac947b6de0%40news.povray.org%3E/

This works, but doesn’t explain the problem.

  0.70 * < cos(120 *pi/180),sin(120 *pi/180),0>
  0.70 * < cos(240 *pi/180),sin(240 *pi/180),0>
  0.70 * < cos(360 *pi/180),sin(360 *pi/180),0>

  // inner triangle
  0.35 * < cos(  0 *pi/180),sin(  0 *pi/180),0>
  0.35 * < cos(120 *pi/180),sin(120 *pi/180),0>
  0.35 * < cos(240 *pi/180),sin(240 *pi/180),0>
  0.35 * < cos(360 *pi/180),sin(360 *pi/180),0>
}

Note that the end points /should/ be identical. There are however some minor rounding differences, which mess up polygon computations. Compare with the following code, which leads to the desired results:

polygon { 8,
  // outer triangle
  0.70 * < cos(  0 *pi/180),sin(  0 *pi/180),0>
  0.70 * < cos(120 *pi/180),sin(120 *pi/180),0>
  0.70 * < cos(240 *pi/180),sin(240 *pi/180),0>
  0.70 * < cos(  0 *pi/180),sin(  0 *pi/180),0>

  // inner triangle
  0.35 * < cos(  0 *pi/180),sin(  0 *pi/180),0>
  0.35 * < cos(120 *pi/180),sin(120 *pi/180),0>
  0.35 * < cos(240 *pi/180),sin(240 *pi/180),0>
  0.35 * < cos(  0 *pi/180),sin(  0 *pi/180),0>
}

Code inspection shows that the polygon insideness testing code tests for precise equality of the points, whereas the general policy of POV-Ray is to accept slight rounding differences.

Using interpolated image_maps in functions results in pixel-sized dot-artifacts when using the functions back into pigments.

This problem doesn’t shows using the same code on POV-Ray 3.6.

I qualified it as “low severity” because is not going to happen to most users: it will show only when using some advances techniques, for example when you want to decompose an image_map into the RGB components, perform operations, and mixing them back with an averaged pigment (example attached).

original post on povray.beta-test:

POV-Ray 3.7.0.RC3 on Slackware 13.0 x86_64.
I pointed povray to use the calibri.ttf font over on my Windows 7 partition.
The result is garbled - strange letters with accents appear instead of the
expected text. (KDE's kfontview opens calibri.ttf OK, with nothing strange).

Pointing povray to use other fonts of Win7, e.g. comic.ttf and arial.ttf, was
OK.

I solved the problem by pushing calibri.ttf through fontforge and resaving it
as mycalibri.ttf.

Cheers,
Peter

Confirmed with development version on Windows XP x64.

Possibly a similar problem as  FS#162 .

202Geometric PrimitivesDefinite Bug3.70 RC3Very LowLowNumerical oddities in Julia_FractalTracked on GitHub

Task Description

I understand that some things have changed in the way certain computations in POV-Ray decide when something is “good enough” and I think this is biting me in Julia_Fractal (where, of course, the highest-resolution computations are needed).

The bug has been posted here:

http://news.povray.org/povray.bugreports/thread/%3Cweb.4dbf2e26b56a53c15b4449250%40news.povray.org%3E/

Including a short .pov file and instructions that reproduce it.

(It pops up in other configurations and view angles as well, but this one captures in in a way that makes it clear it’s a bug: the distance of the camera from the origin appears to change the shape of the rendered object).

This appeared first on a Windows Server 2003 machine, it is apparently confirmable on at least one other system as per that thread.

3.70 RC4 Task Description

A scene of a hollow sphere viewed from the inside:

difference {
    sphere { 0, 100 }
    sphere { 0, 99 }
    pigment { rgb 1 }
    finish { ambient .4 }
}

global_settings {
    radiosity {
        error_bound .1
    }
}

Rendering produces dark splotches at the centers of the pretrace blocks, as shown in the attached image. Blocks rendered earlier have darker splotches. They also differ in shape between renders even with +HR (but not with +WT1).

Turning “always_sample” on, changing “pretrace_end” to 0.01, or increasing “count” past 1000 makes them imperceptibly faint (they can still be seen by increasing image contrast).

This is possibly a bug, as 3.6 doesn’t produce these artifacts regardless of additional settings.

 207 Parser/SDLDefinite Bug3.70 RC3Very LowLow Attempted to redefine float identifier as function ide ...Closed

Future release Task Description
#macro A()
    #local f = function { x }
#end

#local f = 1;
A()

This gives:

File 'bug.pov' line 2: Parse Error: Attempted to redefine float identifier as
 function identifier.

The problem is that this makes using functions in library macros difficult. Basically, they must have a globally unique name that’s not used in any of the macros or files that call the macros. #undef doesn’t really help, because it destroys the identifier in the calling scope.

For example, one of the macros in the standard include files names a function “fn”, so this doesn’t work:

#include "transforms.inc"

#local fn = 42; // fnord?
#local fn_pos = vtransform(x, transform { rotate 30*y } );

The reason for this restriction is explained in Parse_RValue in source/backend/parser/parse.cpp:

    // Do NOT allow to redefine functions! [trf]
    //   #declare foo = function(x) { x }
    //   #declare foo = function(x) { foo(x) } // Error!
    // Reason: Code like this would be unreadable but possible. Is it
    // a recursive function or not? - It is not recursive because the
    // foo in the second line refers to the first function, which is
    // not logical. Further, recursion is not supported in POV-Ray 3.5
    // anyway. However, allowing such code now would cause problems
    // implementing recursive functions after POV-Ray 3.5!

In this case the restriction is applied too broadly: it should be safe to redefine anything other than a function to a function and still avoid it looking like recursion. In fact, there’s a restriction in Parse_Declare specifically to prevent redefining functions.

Certain types of errors are being reported twice. For example:

Parse Error: Expected ‘numeric expression’, } found instead
Parse Error: Expected ‘object’, undeclared identifier ‘foo’

The first error was a user typo when not enough parameters were specified, and the later when calling a yet to be declared object.

During investigation it was also discovered that improperly formed scale statements also produced the double error report: <scale 1,0.5,1>

Verified on linux and windows platforms.
